How Many Sessions Before Results? What the Study Protocols Actually Used

Controlled studies in this field ran 12 to 30 treatment sessions before measuring outcomes. If you are assessing your results after a week, you are evaluating the treatment on a timeline no researcher would accept.

What the protocols specified

Barolet and colleagues, in their 2009 Journal of Investigative Dermatology split-face study, measured outcomes after 12 LED treatments. At that point more than 90% of participants showed reduced wrinkle depth and surface roughness, and 87% improved on the Fitzpatrick wrinkling severity score.

Wunsch and Matuschka, in their 2014 controlled trial of 136 volunteers, treated participants twice weekly for 30 sessions before collecting endpoint data — roughly 15 weeks. Measurements included ultrasound collagen density, digital profilometry and blinded photographic assessment.

Neither study measured at week one. Neither would have found anything if they had.

Translating protocols to a home routine

Study protocols mostly used two to three sessions a week with clinical-grade equipment. Home devices are less powerful, and compensate with frequency — which is consistent with the dose-response literature, where regular moderate exposure outperforms occasional intense exposure.

A daily four-minute session reaches 12 sessions in under two weeks and 30 sessions in a month. On the study timeline, that is roughly where you should start looking.

A realistic schedule

  • Sessions 1–12 (about two weeks) — the point at which Barolet's participants showed measurable change. Expect calmer, more even skin rather than softer lines.
  • Sessions 12–30 (weeks two to five) — texture and fine lines begin to respond.
  • Sessions 30+ (week five onward) — firmness, the change most people are actually paying for.

The single most useful thing you can do

Photograph yourself before session one. Same light, same time, no makeup, three angles. Gradual change is invisible in a mirror you look into daily, and almost everyone who reports "no difference" has no baseline to compare against.
