Why Longer Sessions Don't Work Better: The Biphasic Dose Response

Doubling your session length does not double your results. In photobiomodulation there is an optimal dose, and exceeding it produces diminishing and eventually reduced benefit. This is one of the most consistently documented findings in the field.

Huang, Chen, Carroll and Hamblin reviewed this in Dose-Response in 2009, in a paper titled simply "Biphasic Dose Response in Low Level Light Therapy". Their summary of the phenomenon is blunt: low levels of light are beneficial, high levels are not.

The relationship follows what is known as an Arndt-Schulz curve — response rises with dose to a peak, then falls away. Past the peak, additional exposure does not simply stop helping. It can actively reduce the effect.

The authors documented this pattern in both cell-culture studies and animal experiments, and returned to it in a 2011 update that reinforced the same conclusion.

Why this happens

The mechanism relates to how mitochondria respond to light. At moderate doses, light absorption increases ATP production and produces a mild, useful signalling response. At excessive doses that signalling tips into oxidative stress, which is the opposite of what you want.

The system is being nudged, not driven. Nudging harder does not move it further.

What this means in practice

Three practical consequences follow, and all of them run against marketing instinct.

Longer is not better. A twenty-minute session is not five times a four-minute one. It may be worse.

Frequency beats intensity. Regular moderate exposure outperforms occasional heavy exposure. Daily short sessions are the pattern the literature supports.

More powerful is not automatically better. A device advertising extreme output is advertising the ability to overshoot the optimal dose more easily.

Four minutes is a specification, not a limitation. It sits in the range the research supports, and it is short enough that people actually complete it every day — which matters more than any single session, because the effect is cumulative.
